Do Electrolyte Drinks Need Sugar?

Why do so many hydration drinks use sugar in their formulas?
Sugar itself is not necessary, but what helps speed up absorption is glucose —and glucose is one of the two molecules that make up sugar.
Once the body separates the sugar molecules, the glucose can be used to help with absorption, but that process takes time.
How Glucose and Sodium Support Hydration
Glucose, along with sodium, has been shown through clinical study to help the body absorb fluids more efficiently.
In the small intestine, glucose works with sodium through the Sodium-Glucose Transport System, or SGLT.
When glucose and sodium are absorbed together, water follows them from the intestine into the body.
This is the process used in medical oral rehydration solutions recommended by the World Health Organization.
Does That Mean Sugar-Free Drinks Can’t Hydrate You?
No.
Plain water and sugar-free electrolyte drinks can still hydrate you.
However, the process may be slower.
The advantage of a properly balanced glucose-and-sodium drink is that it uses an additional absorption pathway—almost like a shortcut—which can be especially helpful during:
Prolonged exercise
Heavy sweating
Diarrhea
Significant dehydration
That said, simply including glucose and sodium does not automatically mean a hydration drink will be absorbed quickly.
Formulation Matters
The concentration of ingredients in the mix will determine absorption, so formulation really matters.
The proper balance of electrolytes and glucose is crucial.
If the drink is too concentrated, it can slow stomach emptying or leave more water in the intestine.
OMG! Hydration was formulated with a complete understanding of ingredient balance.
Our combination of carbohydrate, electrolytes, B vitamins, and amino acids creates a finished product unlike other hydration formulas on the market.
Sugar is not the only way to support glucose-assisted hydration. The source, concentration, and balance of the entire formula matter.
Powered by ElectraCell™
ElectraCell™ was developed to enhance the rate of absorption and boost energy quickly without the use of sugar.
Thanks to ElectraCell™, OMG! Hydration boasts the lowest osmolality among the products we tested.
In independent laboratory testing conducted under the same test conditions, OMG! Hydration measured 76 mOsm/kg and had the lowest osmolality among the tested formulations from:
Liquid I.V.
Nuun
DripDrop
Pedialyte
Waterboy
The lower the osmolality, the faster the absorption.
OMG! Lab Result: 76 mOsm/kg in independent laboratory testing under the same conditions as the compared products.
So, What Is ElectraCell™?
ElectraCell™ is not sugar, but it is made up largely of glucose chains.
It is comprised of:
Specific amino acids
Organic rice maltodextrin
Apple cider vinegar powder
We use clean, non-GMO, vegan-friendly ingredients and a very specific organic rice maltodextrin that is cleanly processed with water and amylase.
How Rice Maltodextrin Is Made
Rice maltodextrin is a partially hydrolyzed rice starch.
The process begins by soaking rice in water and heating it so that the starch gelatinizes.
Amylase—an enzyme—is then added to the mixture.
Amylase begins breaking down the long starch molecules into shorter chains of glucose.
It is worth noting that amylase is also the enzyme our bodies naturally use to break down carbohydrates.
The shorter glucose chains make the rice maltodextrin much easier for the body to digest than sugar.
Every Ingredient Has a Purpose
Every ingredient used in OMG! Hydration was purposely included.
The goal was not simply quick absorption, but complete recovery at a faster pace than sugar drinks.
The Bottom Line
Effective hydration depends on having the right balance of ingredients, taking advantage of the Sodium-Glucose Transport System, and avoiding excessive concentration that may slow fluid delivery.
OMG! Hydration uses ElectraCell™ — a blend containing organic rice maltodextrin, amino acids, and apple cider vinegar powder — to provide rapidly digestible carbohydrate with relatively few dissolved particles.
In independent laboratory testing conducted under the same conditions, the OMG! Hydration formula measured 76 mOsm/kg and had the lowest osmolality among the tested formulations from Liquid I.V., Nuun, DripDrop, Pedialyte, and Waterboy.
The result confirms that sugar is not necessary to take advantage of the SGLT system, and that fast absorption can be achieved with the right combination of ingredients.
