Hydration and the Purpose of Sodium in the Body

Why Can High-Sodium Hydration Drinks Be More Harmful Than Helpful


The hydration industry is booming because consumers understand the importance of hydration better than ever and sales of powder mixes and RTD’s reflect it.


Not all hydration drinks are the same. With better than 100 different brands of hydration in the market trying to figure out what is best can be confusing. Here are some things to consider:


  • Stay away from mixes with high sugar content

  • Consider mixes that contain B vitamins. B vitamins are vital for energy metabolism, nerve function, and red blood cell production. They are not stored long-term, so they are excreted in sweat. B6 specifically, is important for maintaining fluid balance in the cells as well as help move sodium and potassium in and out of the cells.

  • Stay away from artificial colors, and flavors

  • Stay away from artificial sweeteners

  • Low osmolality drinks rehydrate the quickest


Lastly; look at the electrolyte content. High Sodium powder mixes are becoming very popular. With between 750 – 1000mg of sodium per serving these mixes are not made for the average person wanting to supplement their need for electrolytes.


The high sodium mixes are good for people who are sweating a great deal either from extreme exercise or working outdoors in high temperatures and high humidity.


To put this into perspective:

During a 1-hour workout in the gym, an average body will sweat ½ to 1 liter and lose between 300–700 mg of sodium.

After a workout, ingesting too much sodium makes the body hold on to more water, which increases the amount of fluid in the bloodstream. That can lead to several effects:


  • Higher blood pressure: Extra sodium draws water into the blood, increasing blood volume and pressure on artery walls.

  • More strain on the heart: The heart has to work harder to pump the extra fluid.

  • More strain on the kidneys: The kidneys must filter out excess sodium; if intake is consistently high, this can be harder to manage.

  • Fluid retention and bloating: Some people may notice puffiness, swelling, or feeling “puffy.”

  • Greater cardiovascular risk over time: Chronically high sodium intake is linked with increased risk of hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.

  • Possible dehydration-like thirst response: High sodium can make you feel very thirsty because the body is trying to dilute sodium levels.


When it comes to hydration drinks, the concern is that a drink with 750–1,000 mg of sodium can add a large amount of sodium quickly — especially if the person is not doing prolonged exercise, sweating heavily, or losing a lot of sodium through illness.


For everyday hydration, too much sodium may create more fluid and blood pressure burden than actual hydration benefit.

Sodium is vital for hydration, nerve and muscle function, blood pressure regulation, and overall cellular health. More sodium does not always mean better hydration.


Hydration drinks with more than 700 mg of sodium per serving can be more hazardous than helpful for many people because they may push total daily sodium intake beyond recommended limits, raise blood pressure, and increase strain on the heart and kidneys.
