What Is ElectraCell™? The Proprietary Technology Behind OMG! Hydration

When people compare hydration products, they usually begin with the front of the package.

How much sodium does it contain? How many electrolytes are included? Does it contain sugar? How long is the ingredient list? Those details matter, but they do not tell the complete story.

OMG! Hydration was built around something no other hydration brand has access to:

ElectraCell™

ElectraCell is the proprietary, patent-pending hydration technology exclusively available in OMG! Hydration. It was developed to change the characteristics of the finished hydration formula - not simply add another ingredient to the label. To understand the measurable difference ElectraCell makes, the OMG formula was tested in two versions.

The ElectraCell™ Difference

Same formula. One intentional difference.

Comparison chart of OMG with and without ElectraCell

Third-party laboratory testing compared the OMG formulation with and without ElectraCell™. The formulation containing ElectraCell measured 76 mOsm/kg, compared with 206 mOsm/kg without ElectraCell.

The graphic compares the same OMG base formula with and without ElectraCell.

On the left, the formula without ElectraCell measured 206 mOsm/kg.

On the right, the formula containing ElectraCell measured 76 mOsm/kg.

The purpose of this comparison was not to evaluate two unrelated hydration products. It was to isolate the impact of ElectraCell within the OMG formula. When ElectraCell was added, the measured osmolality decreased by approximately 63%.

What is osmolality?

Osmolality measures the concentration of dissolved particles in a liquid.

In a hydration drink, those particles may include:

  • Sodium

  • Potassium

  • Magnesium

  • Calcium

  • Amino acids

  • Vitamins

  • Sugars or other carbohydrates

  • Flavoring ingredients

  • Other dissolved components

Osmolality reflects the concentration of the finished solution. That concentration can influence how fluid moves through the digestive system, although the complete formulation and the individual’s needs also matter. Every dissolved ingredient contributes to the concentration of the finished drink. That is important because the body does not respond only to the ingredient amounts printed on the package. It must also process the completed beverage after the powder has been mixed with water. Osmolality gives us a way to evaluate how concentrated that finished beverage is.

What does hypotonic mean?

A hypotonic drink has a lower concentration of dissolved particles than blood plasma.

Both versions of the OMG formula shown in the test were hypotonic. The formula without ElectraCell measured 206 mOsm/kg. The formula with ElectraCell measured substantially lower at 76 mOsm/kg.

The important finding is not simply that OMG is hypotonic. It is that the addition of ElectraCell created a measurable change in the concentration of the finished formula. ElectraCell did not simply add more to the formula.

ElectraCell is not a commodity ingredient, a broadly available hydration system, or a technology that competing hydration brands can add to their products. It is proprietary, patent pending, and exclusively available through OMG! Hydration.

OMG was not created first and then supplemented with ElectraCell as an afterthought.

The product was built around it. The testing demonstrated that ElectraCell changed the measured osmolality of the formula from 206 to 76 mOsm/kg. That is why ElectraCell is not merely one component of OMG. It is the technology at the foundation of the formula.

“ElectraCell was developed as a proprietary hydration technology - not simply as another ingredient to add to a label. Our goal was to create a system that meaningfully changed the characteristics of the finished formula. When we tested OMG with and without ElectraCell, the measured osmolality moved from 206 to 76 mOsm/kg. That result gave us a clear, measurable demonstration of the difference ElectraCell was making within the formulation.”

Paul Knox, Scientist, Formulator and Inventor of ElectraCell™

Why the 76 mOsm/kg result matters

The significance of the test is not simply that 76 is a lower number than 206.

The result demonstrates that ElectraCell materially changed a measurable characteristic of the finished OMG beverage. That supports three important points.

  1. OMG was formulated intentionally

OMG was not developed by chasing the highest sodium number, the largest electrolyte total, or the longest ingredient list. The formula was built around concentration, balance and delivery.

  2. The finished beverage matters

Consumers often compare hydration powders by looking only at the Supplement Facts panel. Those numbers are important, but they do not describe everything about the beverage after it has been mixed with water. Osmolality helps evaluate the concentration of the finished drink.

  3. ElectraCell is what makes OMG different

Many hydration products use similar categories of ingredients. They may contain sodium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins, amino acids or flavoring systems. ElectraCell is the proprietary technology no other hydration brand has access to. It is what makes the OMG formula uniquely ours.

Does lower osmolality automatically mean better for everyone?

Not in every circumstance. Hydration needs can vary based on factors including:

  • Activity level

  • Exercise duration

  • Heat and humidity

  • Individual sweat rate

  • Sodium loss

  • Diet

  • Health considerations

  • Whether carbohydrates are needed during endurance activity

Someone completing a long-duration endurance event may need a different carbohydrate and sodium strategy than someone hydrating during an everyday workout, a workday, travel or a round of golf.

The OMG comparison should therefore be understood precisely:

The laboratory testing established that the formula containing ElectraCell measured 76 mOsm/kg, compared with 206 mOsm/kg without ElectraCell.

The comparison demonstrates that:

  • The OMG formulation without ElectraCell measured 206 mOsm/kg

  • The OMG formulation with ElectraCell measured 76 mOsm/kg

  • The measured osmolality was approximately 63% lower with ElectraCell

  • Both tested formulations were hypotonic

  • ElectraCell substantially changed the measured concentration of the finished formula

ElectraCell is:

  • Proprietary

  • Patent pending

  • Exclusively available in OMG! Hydration

  • Unavailable to competing hydration brands

  • Central to the OMG formulation

  • Supported by third-party laboratory osmolality testing

  • Responsible for the measurable difference between the two tested formulas

Most hydration brands can add more sodium, more electrolytes or more ingredients.

They cannot add ElectraCell. That is the difference only OMG can offer.

The ElectraCell difference

Most hydration brands focus on what they put into the packet.

We also care about what the completed beverage becomes after it is mixed with water.

ElectraCell helped us create an OMG formula that is:

  • Zero sugar

  • Hypotonic

  • Low in measured osmolality

  • Made with five essential electrolytes

  • Formulated with BCAAs and B vitamins

  • Built around proprietary, patent-pending technology

  • Designed with intentional formulation at its core

That is what we mean by smarter hydration. Not more for the sake of more. A more intentional hydration formula, built differently from the beginning. Explore the science behind OMG!

FAQs

What is ElectraCell?

ElectraCell is the proprietary, patent-pending hydration technology exclusively available in OMG! Hydration. It is central to the formulation and is not available to competing hydration brands.

No. ElectraCell is proprietary technology exclusively available through OMG! Hydration. It is not a third-party hydration system that other electrolyte brands can purchase or use.

The tested OMG formulation containing ElectraCell measured 76 mOsm/kg.

The tested comparison formula without ElectraCell measured 206 mOsm/kg.

The reduction from 206 to 76 mOsm/kg represents an approximately 63% decrease in measured osmolality.

Yes. Both tested formulations were hypotonic, with the ElectraCell version measuring substantially lower.
